Statement by Former Vice President Al Gore on President Trump’s plan to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement

“Today marks the official start of President Trump’s reckless attempt to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, a process which takes a year to complete. Despite the President’s best efforts, the U.S. cannot officially withdraw from the Paris Agreement until one day after next year’s presidential election. And even if he follows through, it would take just 30 days for a new president to get us back in. This decision is ultimately in the hands of the voters.

In the two years since Trump first announced his intention to withdraw, we have seen unprecedented commitments from civic leaders, mayors, governors, investors, and the business community to ensure that the United States remains a global leader in confronting the climate crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people, of all ages, have taken to the streets demanding their communities, employers, schools, and representatives take action to help save the climate balance. These actions are far more powerful and impactful than the distractions and false promises coming from the White House.

No one person or party can stop our momentum to solve the climate crisis, but those who try will be remembered for their complacency, complicity, and mendacity in attempting to sacrifice the planet for their greed.”
